🎬
Documentary Film

Long-form and short-form documentary. Athlete films, cultural embeds, expedition footage, commercial storytelling. From 90 seconds to feature length.

📷
Documentary Photography

Still images with the weight of film. Street photography, portrait work, sports and action, editorial documentary series. The decisive moment, honestly captured.

🤝
Commercial & Brand

Photo and film campaigns for brands that want to associate with real achievement. We deliver both disciplines — and they work better together than apart.

Most production companies do one or the other. We do both — and we think the best stories deserve both. A film captures movement and time. A photograph captures the moment within it. Together they tell the complete story.

Why Make It Real

Real people.
Real moments.
Nothing fabricated.

In a world flooded with CGI, AI-generated imagery and fabricated spectacle — we go the other way.

Make It Real documents extraordinary people through film and photography. Athletes. Street life. Documentary portraits. Whatever the subject — we capture it honestly, with no fabrication and no safety net.

The goosebumps only work because everything you're watching actually happened.

What Sets Us Apart

We don't just film it.
We go and live it.

Most production companies send a crew. We are the crew. James and Jack don't observe from a distance — we embed, we climb, we ski, we go on expeditions. We survive in the wild for weeks if that's what the story demands.

If your story happens at altitude, we're at altitude. If it happens in a remote river system, we're in the river. If it means following a tribe for a month, we follow the tribe.

When you need a production studio willing to go to the extreme to capture your story — we are the ones who make it real. You've done the hard work. We'll go wherever it takes to share it.

🧗
Rock Climbing
We go vertical. Camera in hand.
⛷️
Skiing & Snow
High-altitude, extreme terrain.
🏕️
Expeditions
Weeks in the wild if that's what it takes.
🌍
Cultural Embeds
Follow a tribe. Document a life.
Why It Works
01
Nothing is faked.
Every frame is real. Every feat happened. The danger was real, the conditions were real, the outcome was real. We do not simulate, reconstruct or re-stage. Ever.
02
The feeling only works because it's true.
The stomach drop, the disbelief, the goosebumps — these are hard-wired to authenticity. They only exist because you know what you're watching actually happened. That cannot be generated.
03
Our position gets stronger every year.
As AI floods every platform, real human achievement becomes rarer and more powerful on screen. We are not chasing a trend. We are the counter-current.

The story behind the studio
This is what Make It Real means.

It started with cheap flights. James Cumberland and Jack Shuttleworth saw an opportunity — Marrakesh, practically no notice, a camera and no plan whatsoever. They went. They spent 24 hours walking the medina, photographing the people, the noise, the colour, the life.

Nobody asked permission to dream it. They just made it real.

That trip became the proof of concept for everything Make It Real stands for: you don't wait for the perfect conditions, the budget, the brief. You see the story, you show up, and you document what's actually there.

About James Cumberland

Leeds, UK — with Jack Shuttleworth.

I've always loved going to the cinema — not just because I love films, but because of the way they make me feel. Every drop of blood, sweat and tears an artist poured into something, landing in a dark room full of strangers. That feeling. That's what I'm chasing.

I'm a story-first filmmaker. I strongly believe that once you have an incredible story, making the film is the easy part. That's why I'm here — to come and document your incredible story. You've already done the hard work. I'm just here to share it.

Make It Real started with a pair of cheap flights to Marrakesh — James and Jack, no plan, just cameras and a belief that showing up is the hardest and most important thing you can do.

We are not spreading fake news. We are telling real stories in an honest, humble way. What you see is what happened.

The Origin Story

How Make It Real
actually started.

Marrakesh, Morocco · 2024
The dream became real
before we talked ourselves out of it.

James and Jack saw cheap flights to Marrakesh. No plan, no budget, no brief. They just went. Armed with a camera and 24 hours, they walked the medina and photographed everything — the people, the chaos, the beauty, the rawness of a city completely alive.

That's the whole philosophy in one trip. Make It Real isn't a production company that plans things to death and then shoots. It's two people who saw something worth documenting and went and documented it.

The name was already there. We just had to prove it.

Jack was there from the beginning — on the plane to Marrakesh before the plan existed, camera in hand. A natural eye for the decisive moment and the person behind it.

Jack brings the photographic side of our work to life — still images that carry as much weight as any film frame.

How We Work

Four commitments
we don't compromise.

I
Honest to the subject.
We tell your story as truthfully as we can. No manipulation. No pre-written arc. We share edits before publication. We honour your right to your own story. The person is not a character — they are a human being who trusted us.
II
Honest to the viewer.
What you see on screen happened. We do not re-stage moments we missed. We do not use cutaway footage to imply something that did not occur. What you see is what we got. What we got is what really happened.
III
Humble and transparent.
We are a small studio with a point of view. We will make mistakes. When we do, we say so. We do not hide behind corporate language. We are building this in public — and we think that's a strength, not a weakness.
IV
Respectful of the world we film in.
The natural world is not a backdrop. It is a living, finite thing we depend on. The most spectacular stories happen in the most spectacular places — and those places must still exist for us to tell them.
The Manifesto
Anyone can make something look impossible.
We find people who actually do the impossible.
Anyone can generate a breathtaking image.
We capture breathtaking moments that already happened.
Anyone can fake a feeling.
We make films where the feeling is real — because everything you're watching is real.
That's not a feature. That's the whole point.
Your story deserves to be told properly.

If you're doing something extraordinary, we want to hear about it. We don't care how well known you are. We care about what you're doing and why.

Working with us means you retain full creative input. We share edits before anything goes public. Your story is never misrepresented. It stays yours.

We don't charge you to tell your story. The work is funded through brand partnerships with companies whose values align with the story being told.

Real stories perform better than ads.

The most effective brand content doesn't look like brand content. It looks like something people actually want to watch — because it is.

Make It Real partners with brands whose values align with the story being told. Your brand earns its place rather than being grafted on top.

Briefs that compromise the honesty of the film are declined. That's not a limitation — it's exactly why the work is worth associating with.

On Storytelling
Why I started Make It Real — and the moment in a cinema that changed everything.
It wasn't the film itself. It was the feeling. Every drop of blood, sweat and tears an artist poured into something — landing in a dark room full of strangers. That's the feeling I'm chasing with every project.

On Storytelling
You've done all the hard work. I'm just here to share it.
The best stories don't need a director — they need someone willing to show up, listen, and get out of the way. Here's what that actually looks like in practice.

On Storytelling
Why CGI killed the feeling — and what real footage gives back.
The goosebumps aren't in the image. They're in the knowledge that what you're watching actually happened. This is the thing that cannot be generated.

The Natural World
Why the most spectacular stories need the most spectacular world to still exist.
You can't film on a glacier that's gone. You can't document a reef that's bleached. The natural world isn't our backdrop — it's our material. And it's disappearing.

Field Notes
What street photography in Marrakesh taught me about documentary filmmaking.
When you're photographing strangers in a city you don't know, you learn one thing fast — the camera either gets in the way of the moment or it disappears into it. Here's how you disappear.

05 — Sustainability

The world we
film in must
still exist.

This is not a values statement. It is a condition of our work.

The Honest Case

We protect what
we film in.

Make It Real films in some of the most extraordinary natural environments on earth. These places are not backdrops — they are living ecosystems that exist independently of us.

We have an obvious self-interest in protecting them. Without an intact natural world, the stories we want to tell don't exist. But that self-interest and genuine care are not in conflict.

We are not a sustainability company. We are a production studio that takes its responsibility to the natural world seriously.

We show people what they are choosing to remove
by not caring. Not through argument — through beauty.
Our Commitments

Four specific things
we actually do.

Minimum footprint in the field.
Small crews. No single-use plastics on location. Equipment carried where vehicles can't go. We restore every location to the condition we found it.
No performance from nature.
We never bait wildlife, manipulate environments, or stage natural moments. If we can't capture something without intervention, we wait — or we don't capture it.
Carbon transparency.
We account for the carbon cost of every production. We offset where we cannot yet reduce, and we publish that accounting below.
Showing, not lecturing.
A two-minute sequence on an intact glacier does more for conservation awareness than most written arguments — because it creates a feeling, not a debate.
We are not perfect. We fly to film. We use equipment built from mined materials. We are not yet carbon neutral.

We are honest about that. And we are actively working to close the gap.
